Royal Wedding Celebration!

In honour of the first Royal Wedding in nearly 8 years, Mellifont Abbey held a day of joyous celebration and festivities for staff, residents, families and friends to enjoy. This turned out to be a great success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody present – a truly historic moment, not just for the nation, but for us in the home too.

In the days prior to the wedding, we held a number of Royal Wedding-themed arts & crafts sessions, with the much-appreciated assistance of some family friends, for all of the residents to enjoy in order to generate some buzz around the big day, and of course to create some beautiful bunting and assorted decorations to put up in the dining room and hallways on the day itself. This added a personal touch to our celebrations and got all of the residents ready and excited for the wedding.

Finally, the day had arrived, and after breakfast the staff at Mellifont put up our gorgeous homemade decorations, cracked open our special tin of biscuits, put the wedding coverage on the big screen, and got all of our residents comfy and settled in the dining room. The mood was jubilant, with all of our staff and residents adorned in Royal-themed party hats whilst clapping and cheering at the coverage. The National Anthem was merrily sung by all, a rousing moment for the home. Residents were extremely happy at the culmination of the wedding, with Harry and Meghan sharing their first kiss as a married couple.

However, we weren’t finished there! Once the wedding ceremony had finished, it was time for our Royal Wedding-themed hot dinner – battered cod fillet and home-cooked chips with mushy peas – a truly scrumptious meal enjoyed by all and one well-catered to the nature of the day. Our chef, Carl, also made a deluxe strawberries & cream sponge cake, which was heartily enjoyed by all and a perfect accompaniment to the meal & the vibe of the day. When we had all finished enjoying and eating, it was time for our group singalong. Nearly all of the residents joined in, as well as the staff, and all were in very good voice – worthy of a Royal Wedding live performance themselves!

We are extremely proud of the residents for getting completely involved in the preparations and celebrations, and would like to thank them all, and the staff, for their enthusiastic participation and efforts. Until next time!
